ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) – A northeast Ohio woman who told police an intruder shot and killed her husband five years ago has been charged with aggravated murder in his death.

Thirty-six-year-old Julene Simko of Vermilion turned herself into authorities Friday morning after being indicted Thursday in the November 2009 slaying of Jeremy Simko. She was freed on a $500,000 bond.

The (Lorain) Morning-Journal reports that Lorain County prosecutors and Vermilion police have been working to solve the case for the last several years. Jeremy Simko was 36 when he was found shot in his second-floor bedroom. Julene Simko told authorities at the time that she was asleep on the third floor when she heard gunshots below.

Julene Simko’s attorney said Friday that his client maintains her innocence.
