Arvin Police officer shot as he walks in to domestic dispute call, suspect now in custody

ARVIN, Calif. – A 20-year-old man is sitting in jail this weekend after reportedly firing a weapon at an Arvin Police officer early Sunday morning.

Jerry Martinez with the Arvin Police Department said the shooting took place at around 6 a.m. Sunday, when officers got a report of a domestic dispute at the 1500 block of Bear Mountain Boulevard in Arvin.

Martinez said officers got in touch with the victim in the dispute, who told them the suspect, 24-year-old Orlando Acosta Valdovinos of Arvin, had a gun. Martinez said Valdovinos then fired the weapon toward the officers as they were making their way into the apartment.

According to Martinez, Officer Jeffery Packebush deflected the firearm and was just shot just above his left shoulder. Another officer, Bret Barker, did not suffer any injuries.

Martinez said Officer Packebush was able to get the gun away from the suspect and both officers were then able to take the suspect into custody.

Officer Packebush was taken to Kern Medical Center so he could be treated for his injuries, and was later released.

Valdovinos was taken to Kern County Central Receiving Facility, where he is now facing charges of attempted murder of a police officer.
